The fascinating view of the earth from outer space will help fill knowledge gaps about urban transformation processes. This is the message that Hannes Taubenböck delivered to his audience.

The analysis of satellite data is a tool assisting the staff of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in documenting escalating urban growth in a global comparison. New metropolises emerge almost every day on our earth and existing cities are merging to form megacities with more than 80 million inhabitants. Open spaces that remain are seized by sprawling slums. Big Earth Data helps pinpoint areas of urban poverty and can also be used in other fields of research as a basis to develop solutions.

Dr. Hannes Taubenböck leads a working group at the DLR’s Earth Observation Center focused on global cities and urban populations. He is also a lecturer at the Institute of Geography of the University of Würzburg.
