The Oskar von Miller Forum welcomes Professor Joyeeta Gupta, a leading international expert on climate justice and sustainable development. Her lecture will address the link between social inclusion and ecological responsibility as a way to sustainably address global challenges such as climate change, resource distribution and social inequality. She focuses on questions of equitable resource use and the need to phase out fossil fuels in a socially just manner. With her interdisciplinary perspective, she highlights how science-based solutions can help to shape a sustainable and just world.
Joyeeta Gupta
Professor Joyeeta Gupta is Distinguished Professor of Climate Justice, Sustainability and Global Constitutionalism at the University of Amsterdam and Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South. In 2023, she was honoured with the Spinoza Prize, the highest academic distinction in the Netherlands, for her groundbreaking scientific contributions. As co-chair of the Earth Commission, she helped develop the theory of ‘Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries’, which was published in the renowned journal Nature in 2023 and received worldwide attention.
Between 1998 and 2014, Gupta was a lead author of the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, and contributed to the design of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, which was honoured with the Zayed Prize. Her research covers a wide range of topics, including global water issues, sustainable development and the development of a global constitution to promote justice and sustainability. She combines environmental science, climate policy and social justice in her work to find answers to the pressing issues of our time.
Her most influential publications include seminal works such as ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Inclusive Development’ and contributions to global environmental programmes such as the Global Environment Outlook (UNEP). She also heads the Open Science Justice Lab, which is working on the development of a global constitutional framework for sustainable and just societies.
