Topic

The lecture will focus on the challenges in the design and construction of major infrastructure projects and how risk and reliability analysis can be used to support the decisions that need to be made to achieve safe and reliable structures, while not overstretching society’s resources and ensuring cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure. Codes and standards are generally developed with more common structures in mind and therefore cannot be directly applied without further consideration when designing complex unique structures such as floating bridges, large suspension bridges, deep immersed tunnels etc.
Inger B. Kroon will give a presentation focusing on some of the engineering design challenges faced on a number of projects over the last few decades, and of course share some of her experiences on the detailed design of the world record main span 1915 Canakkale Bridge in Turkey, which opened to traffic last year.

Inger Birgitte Kroon

Inger B. Kroon is project director in COWI’s department of major bridges and has +25 years’ experience with major infrastructure projects. She holds a Ph.D. in structural reliability and is internationally recognised for her work within risk assessment and probabilistic modelling.

She is working primarily with design project management and establishment of project basis for major bridge and tunnel projects on the international scene. In the last number of years, Inger has been the project director leading detailed design and construction engineering for the 1915 Canakkale suspension bridge project in Turkey with a world record main span of 2023 meter which opened to traffic in 2022.

Work

Together with customers, partners and colleagues, COWI shape a future where people and societies grow and flourish. They do that by co-creating sustainable and beautiful solutions that improve the quality of life for people today and many generations ahead.
Their starting point is gaining a deep understanding of their customers, their aspirations and concerns. This is what sets them apart and how they deliver long-term value.
Primarily located in Scandinavia, the UK, North America and India, they are currently 7,500 people, who offer their expertise in engineering, architecture, energy and environment.
