For the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Olympic Roof in Munich was the model for all lightweight constructions. Deeply rooted in this project, schlaich bergermann partner plans modern lightweight structures that not only bear witness to elegant building culture, but also minimise the use of materials and conserve resources. These principles still apply today to the planning and construction of long-span roof structures and building envelopes for arenas and stadiums. In the past decades, however, other utilisation requirements for large sports facilities have emerged: stadiums are used even more multifunctionally than before, grow or shrink with the number of spectators and are retrofitted with convertible roofs and stands. At the heart of all these developments, however, remains the great challenge of reducing climate-damaging greenhouse gases to a minimum in the design and construction of large sports facilities.
Knut Göppert presents innovative approaches to achieving this goal in the Oskar von Miller Forum. Whether in the modernisation of the Olympic roof in Munich, the material-appropriate design of the wooden suspended roof for the aquatics arena in Paris or the modular concept for the 974 container stadium as an example of the preservation and life-cycle extension of structures or entire building components – the evening is all about the question of what means can be used to design large sports facilities sustainably.

Knut Göppert studied civil engineering at the universities of Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Calgary. In 1989 he joined the Stuttgart office of schlaich bergermann partner and has been a partner since 1998.
With numerous buildings realised during his career at sbp, he has proven that he not only designs architecturally appealing but also efficient and thus affordable structures. He has a wealth of experience in the design of modern sports arenas and a sound knowledge of all aspects and phases of structural design, as well as in leading interdisciplinary teams around the world.
Knut Göppert has been responsible for numerous realised stadium projects, including stadiums on all continents for football world and European championships as well as sports facilities for Olympic Games. In the course of his career, he has received a number of significant awards and prizes and made a name for himself with numerous publications and lectures on lightweight construction, building with membranes and convertible roofs. For over 20 years, he has been responsible for all measures on the Olympic tent roof in Munich at schlaich bergermann partner.
