Sustainable City Planning: a multi-dimensional perspective

Ortwin Renn addresses systemic risks and transformation processes towards sustainable economic and social development.

In addition, he examines the national and international energy supply with a special focus on the social sustainability of the energy transition, as well as the participation of citizens in political decision-making processes and in shaping their living environment.

Ortwin Renn

Since 2016 the sociologist and economist Ortwin Renn serves as Scientific Director at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam. His main research activities at the IASS focus on the role of systemic risks as threats to sustainable development, and the structures and processes for sustainable transformations in Germany and beyond. His research is particularly directed towards transitions of energy systems and energy governance. His aim is to contribute to the mission of the institute to become a highly reputable and acknowledged international centre for transdisciplinary studies on sustainable development.

Furthermore since 2003 he is Partner, Managing Director and Scientific Director of the non-profit company DIALOGIK, a research institute for the investigation of communication and participation processes. Since 2007, he has held the visiting professorship for “Integrated Risk Research” at the University of Stavanger in Norway.

In addition, he is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech), the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) and other scientific advisory boards and committees.
